Every bachelor level health science program in Nepal is accessed through a single national entrance examination called MECEE-BL. Whether you want to become a doctor, dentist, nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist, audiologist, public health professional, or laboratory technician, your path runs through the same exam administered by Nepal’s Medical Education Commission. No medical or allied health bachelor’s program at any government or private institution can be accessed through any other route.
This guide covers every program available through MECEE-BL, what each program trains you to do, how long it takes, what career outcomes it leads to, and how to evaluate which one is right for you. For the complete examination guide including registration, eligibility, and exam pattern, read our complete guide on CEE exam Nepal 2026.
What Is MECEE-BL?
MECEE-BL stands for Medical Education Common Entrance Examination for Bachelor Level. It is administered by the Medical Education Commission, which operates under the Government of Nepal from its office at Sanothimi, Bhaktapur. The exam was established under the National Medical Education Act 2075, which unified Nepal’s previously fragmented medical entrance examination system into a single national examination for all health science programs.
Before MECEE-BL, different universities and colleges ran their own separate entrance tests for each medical program. This created confusion, inconsistency, and a system where students had to sit multiple exams with different syllabi and formats. The unified MECEE-BL replaced all of them. One exam, one merit list, one matching process covers every bachelor level health science program across every government and private medical institution in Nepal.
The exam is a 200 mark, 3 hour multiple choice paper with negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer. Questions are based on the NEB (+2) Class 12 Science curriculum covering Biology at 80 marks, Chemistry at 50 marks, Physics at 50 marks, and a Mental Agility Test at 20 marks. Students scoring at or above the 50th percentile among all candidates who appeared for a specific program cluster are placed on the merit list for that program. Admission is then finalized through an Open House Matching process where students rank their preferred programs and institutions in priority order.

Government constituent college scholarship seats, where fees are heavily subsidized, are the most sought after outcome from MECEE-BL across all programs. Eligibility and seat availability change each cycle and should always be verified through the latest official MEC admission notice at mec.gov.np.
MBBS Through MECEE-BL
MBBS, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, is Nepal’s most prestigious and most competitive bachelor level program and the one that attracts the largest number of MECEE-BL applicants every cycle. It trains students to become medical doctors qualified to diagnose, treat, and manage a broad spectrum of diseases and medical conditions across all body systems.
The program runs approximately 5.5 years total, divided into four and a half years of academic coursework followed by a mandatory one year internship in a recognized hospital. Coursework covers basic medical sciences in the early years including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pathology, transitioning to clinical sciences including internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, and community medicine in later years. A significant portion of later year training is hospital based clinical rotation.
After completing MBBS and the internship, graduates must pass the Nepal Medical Council licensing examination before they can practice independently as a doctor in Nepal. Completion of NMC registration is mandatory for government health service positions, private practice, and for eligibility to sit specialty postgraduate examinations.
Career outcomes for MBBS graduates in Nepal span medical officer positions in government health facilities accessed through Lok Sewa Aayog competitive examination, hospital based clinical practice in private hospitals, academic and research positions at medical colleges, and postgraduate specialty training through MD and MS programs. Many MBBS graduates pursue specialization in fields including internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, orthopedics, radiology, and pathology. The starting salary for government medical officer positions reflects the current public service pay scale, with significant additional income possible for doctors who combine government positions with private clinical practice.
The competition for MBBS seats is the most intense of any MECEE-BL program. Students in the top 100 ranks in the 2026 cycle had access to government medical college scholarship seats including the Institute of Medicine at Tribhuvan University, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, and Patan Academy of Health Sciences. Students ranked beyond the top several hundred needed to evaluate private college management seat options.
BDS Through MECEE-BL
BDS, Bachelor of Dental Surgery, trains students to become dentists qualified to diagnose and treat diseases and conditions affecting teeth, gums, jaw, and the broader oral and maxillofacial structures. It is the second most competitive program in the MECEE-BL system after MBBS.
The program runs approximately 5 years total including a one year mandatory internship, slightly shorter overall than MBBS. Coursework progresses from basic oral sciences including dental anatomy, oral biology, and dental materials in early years through clinical dentistry subjects including restorative dentistry, periodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics, and pedodontics in later years, with increasing clinic time where students treat patients under faculty supervision.
After completing BDS and internship, graduates must pass the Nepal Medical Council dental licensing examination. NMC registration is required before independent practice. Career pathways include dental officer positions in government hospitals and health facilities, private dental practice as a general dentist, and postgraduate specialization through MDS programs in orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontology, and other dental specialties.
BDS had 625 total seats in 2026, of which 119 were scholarship seats. Competition is significant but somewhat less intense than MBBS given the smaller total applicant pool targeting BDS specifically. Government dental facility expansion as part of Nepal’s public health infrastructure has increased demand for qualified dentists in the public sector.
BSc Nursing Through MECEE-BL
BSc Nursing, the four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing, trains students to become Registered Nurses qualified to provide comprehensive nursing care across a wide range of healthcare settings. It is Nepal’s primary four year nursing degree and one of the most practically significant health science programs given the country’s persistent structural nursing shortage.
The program runs four years including structured clinical rotation placements in hospitals, community health settings, and specialized wards. Curriculum covers nursing theory, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, maternal and child health nursing, medical surgical nursing, psychiatric nursing, community health nursing, and nursing research among other subjects. Clinical placements form a substantial portion of total training hours.
After completing BSc Nursing, graduates must pass the Nepal Nursing Council licensing examination and complete NNC registration before practicing as Registered Nurses. Council registration is a legal requirement for practice in any formal healthcare setting.
Career opportunities for BSc Nursing graduates include Registered Nurse positions in government hospitals and health facilities, accessed through Lok Sewa Aayog health service examinations, private hospital nursing roles, community health nursing positions in public health programs, and academic and clinical teaching positions at nursing colleges. Nepal’s nursing shortage, concentrated particularly in rural and remote districts, means demand for qualified nurses is consistently strong in the domestic job market. A significant and growing number of Nepali BSc Nursing graduates pursue further licensure and employment in countries including Australia, the UK, and Gulf nations that actively recruit qualified nurses from Nepal.
BSc Nursing had 2,430 total seats in 2026, of which 711 were scholarship seats, making it one of the larger seat pools in the MECEE BL system and reflecting both the high demand for trained nurses and the government’s investment in expanding nursing education capacity.
BNS Through MECEE-BL
BNS, Bachelor of Nursing Science, is distinct from BSc Nursing in its entry pathway and design purpose. Where BSc Nursing is the four year primary entry pathway for (+2) Class 12 graduates with no prior nursing credential, BNS is designed specifically for students who have already completed a Proficiency Certificate Level or TSLC nursing qualification and want to upgrade to a bachelor level nursing credential.
Eligibility for BNS therefore differs from BSc Nursing. In addition to the (+2) Class 12 Science requirement, applicants through the BNS track who are entering from a prior nursing credential must hold a Proficiency Certificate Level qualification in nursing or midwifery with at least 50 percent aggregate marks, and must have active registration with the Nepal Nursing Council.
The program’s duration runs approximately three to four years depending on the specific curriculum structure at the enrolling institution and the credit recognition applied to prior PCL level study. The curriculum emphasizes advanced clinical nursing practice, nursing leadership and management, research methodology, and community and public health nursing at a level beyond the initial PCL qualification.
Career outcomes for BNS graduates extend beyond the entry level Registered Nurse positions typically available to PCL nursing graduates. BNS qualification opens access to senior nursing positions in hospital nursing departments, nursing education faculty positions at PCL and BSc Nursing programs, nursing management and administration roles, and public health program management positions within government and NGO health programs.
BNS had 1,062 total seats in 2026, of which 451 were scholarship seats, reflecting its significant scale in Nepal’s nursing education system.
BMS Through MECEE-BL
BMS, Bachelor of Midwifery Science, is specifically focused on maternal health, childbirth care, and neonatal health rather than the broader general nursing curriculum of BSc Nursing or BNS. It trains midwives who specialize in the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period alongside care of newborns.
Eligibility requirements align with BNS in that applicants from PCL midwifery programs are the primary target entry route, alongside direct (+2) Class 12 Science entry where available. Nepal Nursing Council registration is required for applicants entering from prior PCL level nursing or midwifery credentials.
Program duration runs approximately three to four years. The curriculum is focused specifically on obstetric and midwifery knowledge and clinical skills including antenatal care, normal and complicated delivery management, postnatal care, family planning, reproductive health, and neonatal care.
Career outcomes focus on midwifery practice in hospitals, maternity centers, and community health settings. The maternal and newborn health area is one of Nepal’s priority public health targets given historical gaps in skilled birth attendance, particularly in rural areas, which creates sustained demand for qualified midwives in both government health facilities and NGO supported maternal health programs.
BMS had 65 total seats in 2026, of which 49 were scholarship seats. The small total seat count reflects the specialized nature of midwifery as a distinct practice field separate from general nursing.
BPH Through MECEE-BL
BPH, Bachelor of Public Health, occupies a distinct position among MECEE-BL programs because its eligibility is broader than most other programs in the list. BPH accepts applicants from any (+2) Class 12 stream, meaning both Science and Management stream graduates with at least 50 percent aggregate marks qualify, rather than requiring the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology that virtually all other MECEE-BL programs mandate.
BPH is a four year program covering the theory and practice of population level health rather than individual clinical care. Curriculum includes epidemiology, biostatistics, health promotion, disease prevention, environmental health, maternal and child health, nutrition, health systems management, and health research methods. The program specifically trains professionals who identify health problems at the community and population level and design, implement, and evaluate programs to address them.
Career outcomes for BPH graduates are concentrated in government public health programs, international health organizations including UN agencies and bilateral development programs operating in Nepal, NGO health and development programs, academic and research institutions focused on public health, and health systems management roles within Nepal’s district and provincial health offices. Many BPH graduates pursue MPH, Master of Public Health, postgraduate study either domestically or abroad to move into senior technical and policy positions in the field.
BPH had 712 total seats in 2026, of which 201 were scholarship seats, making it one of the larger non MBBS program seat pools in the MECEE-BL system.
BPT Through MECEE-BL
BPT, Bachelor of Physiotherapy, trains students in physical rehabilitation, therapeutic exercise, electrotherapy, manual therapy, and musculoskeletal care, enabling graduates to help patients recover movement and function following injury, illness, surgery, or disability.
The program runs four years plus a mandatory internship period, bringing total training time to approximately four and a half years. Curriculum covers anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, and pathology in early years alongside foundational physiotherapy theory, progressing to clinical physiotherapy specializations including orthopedic physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary physiotherapy, pediatric physiotherapy, and sports rehabilitation in later years. Clinical placements in hospital physiotherapy departments form a significant component of later year training.
After completing BPT, graduates must register with the Nepal Health Professional Council before practicing. Career pathways include physiotherapy positions in hospital rehabilitation departments, physiotherapy in sports medicine settings with sports teams and athletic programs, private physiotherapy practice, and community rehabilitation programs for persons with disabilities. Nepal’s expanding rehabilitation infrastructure as hospitals across all provinces develop dedicated physiotherapy departments has strengthened domestic career prospects for BPT graduates compared to even a few years ago.
BPT had 150 total seats in 2026, of which 31 were scholarship seats.
BASLP Through MECEE-BL
BASLP, Bachelor of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, is one of the most specialized and smallest seat programs in the MECEE-BL system. It trains professionals to assess, diagnose, and treat communication disorders including hearing impairments, speech and language delays and disorders, voice disorders, swallowing difficulties, and fluency disorders such as stuttering.
The program runs four years. Curriculum covers anatomy and physiology of the auditory and speech systems, audiological assessment and hearing aid fitting, speech language therapy theory and clinical techniques, developmental communication disorders in children, and adult acquired communication and swallowing disorders following neurological events like stroke.
After completing BASLP, graduates must register with the Nepal Health Professional Council. Career pathways include audiologist and speech language therapist positions in hospital ear, nose, and throat departments, rehabilitation centers, children’s disability programs, schools for children with hearing or communication disorders, and increasingly private practice as awareness of communication disorders and the availability of professional services expand in Nepal.
BASLP had only 16 total seats in 2026, of which 12 were scholarship seats, reflecting the limited but slowly expanding institutional capacity for this highly specialized field in Nepal.
BSc MLT, BSc MIT, BSc Radiotherapy Technology, and Other Allied Health Programs
The remaining MECEE-BL programs cover a range of allied health science fields that are essential to the functioning of modern hospital diagnostic and treatment services. Each trains specialists in a specific technical health domain rather than in direct patient clinical care.
BSc Medical Laboratory Technology, BSc MLT, trains diagnostic laboratory technicians qualified to analyze blood, urine, tissue, and other biological samples to support the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases. Curriculum covers clinical biochemistry, hematology, microbiology, histopathology, and laboratory management. Duration is four years. BSc Radiotherapy Technology had only 5 total seats in 2026 concentrated at NAMS, reflecting the highly specialized and limited institutional capacity currently available for this field.
B.Pharm, Bachelor of Pharmacy, trains pharmacists qualified to compound, dispense, and counsel on medications in hospital, community, and industrial pharmacy settings. Duration is four years. After completion, graduates register with the Nepal Pharmacy Council. Career pathways include hospital pharmacy positions, community pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical manufacturing quality control, and regulatory affairs in Nepal’s growing domestic pharmaceutical industry. B.Pharm had 835 total seats in 2026, of which 210 were scholarship seats, making it one of the larger allied health seat pools.
BAMS, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, trains practitioners in Nepal’s recognized traditional Ayurvedic medical system. Duration is approximately five and a half years including internship, mirroring the structure of MBBS. Graduates register with the Nepal Ayurveda Council and practice in government Ayurvedic hospitals and health posts, private Ayurvedic clinics, and herbal medicine enterprises. BAMS had 110 total seats in 2026, of which 63 were scholarship seats.
B.Optometry trains optometrists qualified to assess, diagnose, and manage vision disorders and prescribe corrective lenses and treatments for conditions of the eye. Duration is four years. Graduates work in eye care centers, ophthalmology departments, community eye health programs, and optical dispensing practices. B.Optometry had 100 total seats in 2026, of which 56 were scholarship seats, reflecting Nepal’s recognized need to expand qualified optometry services particularly for rural eye care access.
B.Perfusion Technology trains perfusionists, highly specialized clinical technologists who operate heart lung bypass machines during cardiac surgery to maintain blood circulation and oxygenation when the heart and lungs are temporarily stopped. Eligibility for Different Medical Courses
The eligibility framework for MECEE-BL programs is broadly consistent but has important variations by program that every applicant must verify before registering.
For the majority of MECEE-BL programs including MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing, BNS, BASLP, B.Perfusion Technology, BSc MLT, BSc MIT, BSc Radiotherapy Technology, BPT, B.Pharm, BAMS, and B.Optometry, the standard eligibility requires completing (+2) Class 12 Science stream specifically with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, and achieving at least 50 percent aggregate marks or a CGPA of 2.4 on the NEB grading scale. There is no distinction between the 50 percent standard and the 2.4 CGPA standard since they represent the same threshold on different scales. Equivalently, students who completed A Levels, IB, or other non NEB qualifications must obtain an equivalence certificate from NEB or MEC.
An alternative eligibility pathway exists for several programs for students who completed a three year Proficiency Certificate Level or recognized Health Science Diploma in a related field including General Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Medical Laboratory Technology, Ophthalmic Science, Dental Science, Pharmacy, Radiography, Ayurveda, or Physiotherapy, with at least 50 percent aggregate marks. These students must additionally hold active registration with the relevant professional council before applying through this pathway.
For BPH specifically, the (+2) Class 12 stream requirement is not restricted to Science. BPH accepts applicants from any (+2) Class 12 stream including Management, with at least 50 percent aggregate marks.
For BNS and BMS, eligibility through the prior nursing or midwifery credential pathway requires active Nepal Nursing Council registration in addition to the academic credential.
Nepali applicants under 16 years of age who cannot yet obtain a citizenship certificate can apply using a minor’s identification card issued by the District Administration Office as of the 2026 MECEE-BL cycle.
There is no upper age limit for MECEE-BL. Students can re appear in subsequent years if they do not qualify or do not secure their preferred program.
Always verify the current specific eligibility requirements for your target program in the official MEC admission notice published at mec.gov.np before registering, since eligibility conditions can be updated between exam cycles.

How to Choose the Right Medical Course
The most important insight for students evaluating MECEE-BL programs is that MBBS is not the only valuable outcome from this entrance examination. Every program listed above produces graduates who are qualified, professionally recognized, and meaningfully contributing to Nepal’s healthcare system and to the health of their communities. The choice between programs should be based on genuine interest in what the work actually involves rather than on prestige alone.
Students whose primary interest is direct clinical diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients across all medical conditions are genuinely suited to MBBS. The breadth of medical practice, from emergency medicine to long term chronic disease management, suits students who want the broadest possible clinical foundation. The competitive intensity and financial cost of MBBS are the highest of any MECEE-BL program for students who do not receive scholarship seats.
Students whose interest is specifically in oral and dental health and who find the precision and technical aspects of restorative and surgical dentistry appealing are genuinely suited to BDS. BDS produces a distinct clinical specialty with strong private practice potential in Nepal’s growing urban dental care market.
Students who are specifically drawn to patient care and support, the relationship centered aspect of health work, and who want to work closely with patients over extended care periods are genuinely suited to BSc Nursing or BNS. Nursing is also one of the programs with the clearest international mobility pathways for qualified Nepali graduates.
Students interested in population health, public health systems, disease prevention, and community health programs rather than individual clinical care are better suited to BPH, which also has the advantage of broader eligibility across streams.
Students whose interest lies in the diagnostic and technical side of healthcare, in laboratory science, imaging, or specialized technical operation, are suited to BSc MLT, BSc MIT, B.Optometry, or B.Perfusion Technology depending on the specific technical domain they find compelling.
Students interested in physical rehabilitation and helping patients recover movement and function are suited to BPT. Students specifically interested in communication disorders are suited to BASLP. Students interested in pharmacy and medication management are suited to B.Pharm. Students interested in Nepal’s traditional Ayurvedic medicine system are suited to BAMS.
Consider program duration, since programs range from four years for most allied health programs to five and a half years including internship for MBBS, BDS, and BAMS. Consider seat availability and the realistic competitive position of your expected MECEE-BL score relative to available seats in each program. Research current professional licensing requirements and career pathways for each program in Nepal’s health service system. Always refer to the latest MEC admission notices for current seat allocations and any program specific requirements that may have changed.
