NEB Grading System in Nepal Explained

The National Examination Board, also known as NEB Nepal, uses a grade point average system instead of traditional percentage ranking. This grading system applies mainly to Class 11 and Class 12 students under NEB.

In the NEB grading system, marks are converted into grades, and each grade carries a specific grade point value. The final GPA is calculated based on the average of these grade points. The highest possible GPA is 4.0.

Here is the current NEB grade scale used in Nepal:

A+, marks between 90 and 100, grade point 4.0
A, marks between 80 and 89, grade point 3.6
B+, marks between 70 and 79, grade point 3.2
B, marks between 60 and 69, grade point 2.8
C+, marks between 50 and 59, grade point 2.4
C, marks between 40 and 49, grade point 2.0
D, marks between 35 and 39, grade point 1.6
NG, below 35, grade point 0.0

NG means Not Graded. If a student receives NG in a subject, it indicates that the minimum required performance was not met.

Under the NEB grading system in Nepal, both theory and practical components are considered when determining the final grade. The overall GPA is calculated by adding the grade points of all subjects and dividing the total by the number of subjects.

This system helps standardize academic evaluation and makes it easier for colleges and universities in Nepal to assess student performance during admission and scholarship selection.

Example of NEB GPA Calculation

Imagine a Class 12 student gets these grades:

English – A which is 3.6
Mathematics – B plus which is 3.2
Physics – A plus which is 4.0
Chemistry – B which is 2.8
Computer Science – A which is 3.6

First, add all the grade points:

3.6 + 3.2 + 4.0 + 2.8 + 3.6 = 17.2

Now divide the total by the number of subjects:

17.2 divided by 5 = 3.44

So the final GPA is 3.44.

This is how NEB GPA is calculated manually. If you do not want to add and divide yourself, you can simply use the NEB GPA calculator above and get your result instantly.

What Happens If You Fail in NEB?

If a student receives NG, which means Not Graded, it indicates that the minimum required marks were not achieved in that subject. In this case, the student must reappear for the subject examination as per NEB rules. A subject with NG does not contribute positively to the final GPA, and students are usually required to clear the failed subject to complete their academic requirements.

NEB allows students to appear in supplementary or grade improvement exams depending on the official rules announced for that year. After passing the subject, the updated grade is used for GPA calculation. Make sure to read our guide if you want to know what is NG in NEB result.

It is always recommended to check the latest official notice from NEB regarding re examination, grade improvement, and result policies.
