Grading Scale (NEB)
This NEB GPA calculator works for Class 12, Class 11, SEE Class 10, and BLE Class 8. Pick your grade level, enter theory and practical grades for each subject, and get your GPA on a 4.0 scale right away. No formula needed.
How this NEB GPA calculator works
Pick your class level at the top of the calculator. Add each subject using the Add Subject button. For each subject, choose the theory grade that appears on your marksheet. If the subject has a practical component, select that grade too.
The calculator applies the correct weighting on its own. Theory carries 75 percent weight and practical carries 25 percent for most subjects. Computer Science is the only exception where both theory and practical carry equal 50 percent weight. After entering all subjects, click Calculate GPA.
Your result appears instantly. You can also save it as an image, save it as a PDF, or print it from the calculator. Use it before your official result comes out to estimate your GPA, or use it after to cross-check what is on your marksheet.
One thing students miss: if you got NG in a subject, do not leave it out. Enter it as NG. The calculator will count it correctly. NG contributes 0.0 grade points but still counts as a subject in the total. Skipping it gives you a wrong GPA.
This NEB GPA calculator automatically calculates the average grade point based on your selected grades. It is designed to help students in Nepal quickly check their GPA during result time without manual calculations. If you want to know how to calculate your NEB GPA manually, you can read our guide How to calculate NEB GPA.
How to calculate NEB GPA manually
NEB does not rank students by percentage. It converts your marks into a grade, then that grade into a fixed grade point. Your final GPA is the average of those grade points across all subjects.
Four steps:
Step 1. Look at your marksheet and write down the grade for each subject.
Step 2. Convert each grade to its grade point using the NEB grading scale below.
Step 3. Add all the grade points together.
Step 4. Divide the total by the number of subjects you have.
That number is your GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Real example for a Class 12 Science student:
English gets A grade, which is 3.6 grade points.
Mathematics gets B+ grade, which is 3.2 grade points.
Physics gets A+ grade, which is 4.0 grade points.
Chemistry gets B grade, which is 2.8 grade points.
Computer Science gets A grade, which is 3.6 grade points.
Add them: 3.6 + 3.2 + 4.0 + 2.8 + 3.6 = 17.2. Divide by 5 subjects. Final GPA is 3.44.
The mistake most students make, if they got NG in one subject they either ignore it or treat it as zero only in the numerator. NG is 0.0 grade points, but the subject still counts in the divisor. So if you have 5 subjects and one is NG, you divide by 5, not 4. That one NG pulls your entire GPA down sharply even if all other subjects are strong. Our full guide on how to calculate NEB GPA walks through more examples including NG scenarios.
NEB grading scale 2082/2083
NEB uses an 8-band grading system. Every student at every level, SEE Class 10, Class 11, Class 12, is graded on this same scale. No stream gets a different table.
| Grade | Marks range | Grade point | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 90 to 100 | 4.0 | Outstanding |
| A | 80 to 89 | 3.6 | Excellent |
| B+ | 70 to 79 | 3.2 | Very good |
| B | 60 to 69 | 2.8 | Good |
| C+ | 50 to 59 | 2.4 | Satisfactory |
| C | 40 to 49 | 2.0 | Acceptable |
| D | 35 to 39 | 1.6 | Partially acceptable |
| NG | Below 35 | 0.0 | Not graded |
Two things about this table that most students do not know.
First, NEB changed the D and NG cutoff in 2079 BS. Before 2079, D started at 30 marks and NG was below 30. From 2079 onwards including all 2082/2083 results, D starts at 35 and NG is below 35. If you are comparing a current result with an older result from before 2079, the different numbers come from this change. This calculator uses the current 35-mark threshold.
Second, the grade point values go down by exactly 0.4 from one band to the next: 4.0, 3.6, 3.2, 2.8, 2.4, 2.0, 1.6. NG breaks this pattern completely. NG is not 1.2. It is 0.0 because NG means the subject was not cleared at all, not that it was cleared with a poor result.
NEB GPA conversion table
grade to GPA, GPA to percentage
Students applying to foreign universities or scholarship programs often need to convert their NEB GPA to a percentage, or explain what a grade means in numbers. Here are the exact conversions based on the official NEB grading scale.
| NEB grade | Grade point | Marks range | Approximate percentage |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 | 90 to 100 | 90% to 100% |
| A | 3.6 | 80 to 89 | 80% to 89% |
| B+ | 3.2 | 70 to 79 | 70% to 79% |
| B | 2.8 | 60 to 69 | 60% to 69% |
| C+ | 2.4 | 50 to 59 | 50% to 59% |
| C | 2.0 | 40 to 49 | 40% to 49% |
| D | 1.6 | 35 to 39 | 35% to 39% |
| NG | 0.0 | Below 35 | Below 35% |
To convert your overall NEB GPA to an approximate percentage, multiply your GPA by 25. A GPA of 3.2 gives approximately 80 percent. A GPA of 3.6 gives approximately 90 percent. A GPA of 2.8 gives approximately 70 percent.
This formula is not exact because each grade band covers a range. Two students who both got A grade scored somewhere between 80 and 89 marks. Both show 3.6 GPA but could be 5 or 6 percentage points apart in actual marks. For university applications and visa documents, always submit your original marksheet along with any percentage conversion. A converted number alone is not enough for most institutions.
What is a good NEB GPA
real numbers from Class 12 result 2082
After the Class 12 result 2082 was published on Shrawan 19, 2082 (August 4, 2025), NEB released GPA distribution data for all 510,987 students who appeared. This is what each GPA range actually means in terms of where you stand nationally.
| GPA range | Number of students | Share of total examinees |
|---|---|---|
| 3.61 to 4.00 | 13,502 | Top 2.6% |
| 3.21 to 3.60 | 55,896 | Next 10.9% |
| 2.81 to 3.20 | 94,268 | Largest passing group — 18.4% |
| 2.41 to 2.80 | 69,812 | 13.7% |
| 2.01 to 2.40 | 8,964 | 1.8% |
| 1.61 to 2.00 | 23 | Extremely rare |
| NG in at least one subject | 153,882 | 38.83% did not fully pass |
If your Class 12 GPA is 3.61 or above, you are in the top 2.6 percent of over half a million students. That is a strong result by any measure in Nepal.
If your GPA is between 3.21 and 3.60, you are in the next bracket covering about 1 in 10 students. Most competitive scholarship programs and bachelor programs in Nepal and abroad consider this a comfortable range.
If your GPA is between 2.81 and 3.20, you are in the most common passing bracket. Most students going to bachelor programs in Nepal fall here.
If your GPA is below 2.0, you almost certainly received NG in at least one subject. The first step is clearing that subject through the grade increment exam, not planning college admission. Read our guide on what NG means in NEB result for the full process.
SEE Class 10 result 2082 was published on Baisakh 28, 2083 (May 11, 2026). Of 430,667 students who appeared, 284,160 passed, a 65.98 percent pass rate. The largest group of passing students scored between 2.80 and 3.20, with 94,222 students in that range. 48,392 students scored 3.60 and above.
Class 12 result 2083 update: the exam ended on Baisakh 27, 2083 (May 10, 2026). A total of 418,800 students appeared across 1,421 centers. The result is expected in the last week of June to late July 2026. You can use this calculator right now to estimate your GPA before the official result is published.
NEB GPA for SEE Class 10 vs Class 12
what is actually different
Both SEE Class 10 and Class 12 use the same NEB grading scale and the same GPA calculation method. The grade bands are identical. The grade points are identical. The formula is identical.
What changes is the subject set. SEE Class 10 includes Compulsory Nepali, Compulsory English, Compulsory Mathematics, Science and Technology, Social Studies, and optional subjects. Class 12 includes stream-specific subjects under Science, Management, Humanities, Law, or Education. Because the subject sets differ, the GPA numbers from each level are not directly comparable even when they look the same.
The practical weighting also differs by subject across both levels. Where practicals exist, the 75-25 rule applies for most subjects and the 50-50 rule applies for Computer Science.
The part that causes problems: some scholarship forms, college applications, and foreign university documents ask for SEE GPA. Others ask for Class 12 GPA. Some ask for both. These are two separate results from two separate exam cycles. If you submit Class 12 GPA when the form asks for SEE GPA, or the other way around, the document is wrong. Check what each form is asking for before you fill it in.
BLE Class 8 uses the same NEB grading scale and the same calculation method. This calculator supports BLE as well.
NEB GPA needed for common next steps after result
These are the actual requirements for the paths most students in Nepal take after their Class 12 or SEE result.
For IOE Engineering entrance exam at Tribhuvan University: you need at least C grade in each of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in Class 12. C grade is 2.0 on the NEB scale. You also need 45 percent in aggregate. Meeting this gets you into the exam. Admission then depends entirely on your entrance exam score, not your GPA. A higher GPA does not help you once you are sitting the IOE exam.
For MBBS and BDS government scholarship seats in Nepal through MECEE-BL: students who win government scholarship seats consistently have Class 12 PCB GPAs above 3.8. The entrance exam score is decisive, but you need strong Class 12 grades to be competitive in the applicant pool in the first place.
For Kathmandu University direct admission: most undergraduate programs ask for a GPA of 2.8 and above from relevant subjects in Class 12. Science faculty and engineering programs need a stronger result alongside entrance qualification.
For merit scholarships at Nepali colleges after Class 12: most institutions give full or partial scholarships to students with a GPA of 3.6 and above from Class 12. Partial fee scholarships typically go to students in the 3.2 to 3.6 range.
Frequently asked questions
What is the highest GPA in NEB?
4.0 is the maximum. You get 4.0 by scoring A+ grade, which is 90 marks or above, in every subject. In the Class 12 result 2082, only a small fraction of the 510,987 students who appeared achieved 4.0 across all subjects in all streams. It is a rare result.
What does NG mean in NEB result?
NG means Not Graded. It appears when you score below 35 marks in the external written exam for that subject, or below 40 percent in internal assessment. NG is not a grade. It means the subject was not cleared. It counts as 0.0 grade points in your GPA calculation and the subject still counts in the divisor, so one NG pulls your entire GPA down. You must appear for the NEB grade increment exam to clear it. In Class 12 result 2082, 153,882 out of 510,987 students received NG. Read our full guide on what NG means in NEB result.
Is 3.2 a good GPA in NEB?
Yes. A GPA of 3.2 is B+ grade, which covers 70 to 79 percent marks. In Class 12 result 2082, students with GPA between 3.21 and 3.60 numbered 55,896 out of 510,987 total students. A 3.2 GPA puts you in the top 13 percent of all students who appeared. It meets requirements for most bachelor programs in Nepal and most standard foreign university admissions.
How do I convert NEB GPA to percentage?
Multiply your GPA by 25. GPA 3.2 gives approximately 80 percent. GPA 3.6 gives approximately 90 percent. GPA 2.8 gives approximately 70 percent. The formula is not exact because each grade band covers a range. Always submit your original marksheet alongside any converted percentage for university or visa documents. The converted number alone is not accepted by most institutions.
Can I calculate my GPA before the official result?
Yes. Enter your expected grades in the calculator to estimate your GPA. This is useful right now because 418,800 students are waiting for the Class 12 result 2083, which is expected in late June to late July 2026. Use the calculator to plan entrance exam registration, scholarship applications, and college admission timelines before the official result comes out.
What happens if I get NG in one subject?
You can appear for the NEB grade increment exam, also called the supplementary exam, without repeating the full academic year. NEB allows students with NG in one or two subjects to sit this exam. After clearing, the new grade replaces NG on your record and your GPA is recalculated. For Class 12, the grade increment exam is typically held in Ashoj, around September or October. Applications must be submitted in the short window NEB announces right after the main result. Do not miss that window.
What is the pass mark in NEB?
Two conditions must both be met. You need at least D grade in every individual subject, which requires scoring 35 marks or above in the external theory exam under current rules. You also need at least C grade in your overall aggregate GPA, which means a GPA of 2.0 or above. If either condition fails, the result is not fully cleared. Getting NG in even one subject means that subject is not cleared no matter how well you did in every other subject.
How does NEB calculate GPA for subjects with theory and practical both?
NEB calculates a weighted combined mark first. Theory carries 75 percent weight and practical carries 25 percent for most subjects. Computer Science is the only common exception where both components carry equal 50 percent weight. The weighted combined mark determines which grade band the subject falls into, and that grade point goes into the overall GPA calculation. Your practical marks directly affect your final GPA. A student who scored B+ in theory but D in practical will get a lower combined grade than one who scored B+ in both.
What is the difference between SEE GPA and Class 12 GPA?
Same scale, same formula, different subject sets and different exam cycles. SEE is Class 10. Class 12 is Plus Two. Your SEE GPA and Class 12 GPA are two separate numbers. They cannot be used in place of each other. When an application asks for your GPA, confirm which one it is asking for.Written by Rja, Nepal education content publisher at nebgpacalculator.com
