BLE stands for Basic Level Examination. It is the Class 8 final exam in Nepal that marks the completion of basic level education before students move to Class 9. Students receive grades and GPA on their marksheet, not percentage marks.
The BLE grading system in Nepal converts your Class 8 marks into letter grades and grade points on a scale of 0.0 to 4.0.
- 90 to 100 = A+ (4.0 GPA)
- 80 to 89 = A (3.6 GPA)
- 70 to 79 = B+ (3.2 GPA)
- 60 to 69 = B (2.8 GPA)
- 50 to 59 = C+ (2.4 GPA)
- 40 to 49 = C (2.0 GPA)
- 35 to 39 = D (1.6 GPA)
- Below 35 = NG (Not Graded)
NEB uses an 8 band 4.0 scale where (A+) A plus (90 to 100 percent) equals 4.0 Outstanding, A (80 to 89 percent) equals 3.6 Excellent, (B+) B plus (70 to 79 percent) equals 3.2 Very Good, B (60 to 69 percent) equals 2.8 Good, (C+) C plus (50 to 59 percent) equals 2.4 Satisfactory, C (40 to 49 percent) equals 2.0 Acceptable, D (35 to 39 percent) equals 1.6, and NG below 35 percent equals 0.0
Many students and parents feel confused when they see grades like A+, B+, or NG instead of familiar marks and percentages. This guide explains everything clearly so you understand exactly what each grade means, how BLE GPA is calculated, what NG means, and how BLE connects to your future studies.
After checking your BLE result, use our BLE GPA calculator to calculate your exact BLE GPA.
What Is BLE Exam in Nepal?
BLE stands for Basic Level Examination. It is the end of Class 8 exam conducted for students completing the basic level of school education in Nepal.
BLE was introduced to replace the older DLE (District Level Examination) which was previously the Class 8 exam. In some areas, it is also called BEE (Basic Education Examination). The official current name is BLE.
BLE exam is conducted by Nepal Educational Board (NEB). However, unlike SEE which is a single national exam managed centrally by NEB, BLE is managed at the local level by municipalities and local governments. Each municipality conducts its own BLE exam, manages the answer sheet checking, and publishes results independently.
Because BLE is managed locally, there is no single national BLE result date. Different municipalities publish results at different times. KMC (Kathmandu Metropolitan City), Lalitpur Metropolitan City, and other municipalities each publish their own results. Your school informs you when your municipality’s result is ready.
BLE helps check the basic knowledge and understanding of students before they move to Class 9. It is the foundation exam that prepares students for the much higher stakes SEE examination in Class 10.
Official BLE Grading Scale 2026
BLE uses the same NEB grading scale used across all exam levels in Nepal. The grade point table is fixed and consistent. Here is the complete official BLE grading scale.
(A+) A plus grade means marks between 90 and 100 with grade point 4.0. This is Outstanding performance. A grade means marks between 80 and 89 with grade point 3.6. This is Excellent. (B+) B plus grade means marks between 70 and 79 with grade point 3.2. This is Very Good. B grade means marks between 60 and 69 with grade point 2.8. This is Good. (C+) C plus grade means marks between 50 and 59 with grade point 2.4. This is Satisfactory. C grade means marks between 40 and 49 with grade point 2.0. This is Acceptable. D grade means marks between 35 and 39 with grade point 1.6. This is the lowest passing grade. NG means marks below 35 with grade point 0.0. This is Not Graded and means the subject was not cleared.
The minimum passing grade in NEB is generally D. Students must score at least 35 marks to avoid NG.
A GPA of 3.2 and above is generally considered a good performance in BLE.
This grading scale is the same for BLE, SEE, Class 11, and Class 12. The only major difference is in how GPA is calculated across these levels.
What Each BLE Grade Means
- (A+) A plus (4.0 GPA) means the student scored 90 to 100 marks. This is outstanding academic performance. Very few students reach (A+) A plus in all subjects. A student who achieves 4.0 overall GPA in BLE has exceptional preparation going into Class 9 and beyond.
- A grade (3.6 GPA) means marks between 80 and 89. This is excellent performance. Students with A grade have a strong foundation in all their BLE subjects.
- (B+) B plus (3.2 GPA) means marks between 70 and 79. This is a good result. A GPA of 3.2 and above is considered good in BLE, which means (B+) B plus grade students are performing well.
- B grade (2.8 GPA) means marks between 60 and 69. This is a solid passing result. Most subjects are understood at a reasonable level. Some areas may need strengthening before Class 9 and 10.
- (C+) C plus (2.4 GPA) means marks between 50 and 59. This is a satisfactory but basic result. Students at this level understand most material but have significant gaps that need attention before SEE.
- C grade (2.0 GPA) means marks between 40 and 49. This is an acceptable but minimum-level result. Significant preparation will be needed in most subjects before facing SEE.
- D grade (1.6 GPA) means marks between 35 and 39. This is the lowest passing grade. Students scored just above the minimum threshold in those subjects.
- NG (0.0 GPA) means marks below 35. The subject was not cleared. Students with NG can appear in the grade increment exam. This is discussed in detail below.
How Is BLE GPA Calculated?
This is one of the most important things to understand correctly about BLE. The GPA calculation for BLE is different from how SEE and Class 12 GPAs are calculated.
SEE and Class 12 use a simple average. You add all subject grade points and divide by the number of subjects. BLE uses a credit hour weighted average. Each subject in BLE has an assigned number of credit hours. Subjects with more credit hours have a bigger impact on your overall GPA.
The official BLE GPA formula is GPA equals Sum of Weighted Grade Points divided by Total Credit Hours of the Class. Sum of Weighted Grade Points equals credit hour of Nepali multiplied by obtained grade point in Nepali, plus credit hour of English multiplied by obtained grade point in English, plus credit hour of Maths multiplied by obtained grade point in Maths, plus credit hour of Our Surrounding multiplied by obtained grade point in that subject, plus credit hour of local subject multiplied by obtained grade point in local subject.
BLE GPA Formula
Example Calculation
Sum of Weighted Grade Points (WGP):
(5 × 3.6) + (4 × 4.0) + (4 × 2.8) + (8 × 3.6) + (5 × 3.2) = 90
Total Credit Hours = 26
GPA = 90 ÷ 26 = 3.46
So, the final BLE GPA is 3.46.
Sum of WGP equals 5 times 3.6, plus 4 times 4.0, plus 4 times 2.8, plus 8 times 3.6, plus 5 times 3.2, which equals 90. Total Credit of the Class is 26. Then GPA equals 90 divided by 26, which equals 3.46.
In this example, the local subject has the highest credit hours at 8. Nepali has 5. English and Maths each have 4. This means the local subject has the biggest impact on the final BLE GPA.
This is why two students with the same individual subject grades can have slightly different overall GPAs in BLE if their local subjects have different grade points. The local subject is weighted most heavily.
For students calculating their own BLE GPA manually, the credit hour values for your specific subjects are shown on your gradesheet or can be confirmed with your school. Use our NEB GPA calculator to get your BLE GPA instantly without manual calculation.
Does BLE Show Percentage?
No. BLE result does not show percentage anywhere on the marksheet or gradesheet. Students receive only grades (letter grades like A+, B, D) and grade points (4.0, 2.8, 1.6) for each subject and an overall GPA.
This is different from what many parents are used to seeing. The old DLE exam and the old SLC system showed percentage marks. The grading system replaced percentage with the 4.0 GPA scale specifically to move away from the pressure and stigma of percentage-based pass or fail divisions.
If someone asks what your BLE result is in percentage terms, you can use the approximate conversion of GPA times 25. For example a 3.2 GPA converts to approximately 80 percent. A 2.8 GPA converts to approximately 70 percent. This is a rough approximation not an official conversion. For more details, you can read our guide on NEB GPA to percentage conversion in Nepal.
For most practical purposes in Nepal, your BLE GPA is the relevant number. No college or institution asks for BLE percentage. BLE GPA is used internally by schools and for educational planning purposes.
Can You Fail in BLE Exam?
Students are not marked as fail in BLE. The word fail does not appear anywhere on a BLE marksheet. If a student does not meet the minimum marks in a subject, the result shows NG which stands for Not Graded.
NG is the lowest outcome in the BLE grading system. It means that specific subject was not cleared at the minimum level. It does not mean the student failed the entire exam. Other subjects where the student performed adequately still show their respective grades.
Students with NG in BLE can appear for the grade increment exam organized by their municipality. KMC published the schedule for Grade Increment exams for students who received NG in BLE results. The Grade Increment exams were held from Baishakh 6 to Baishakh 12, 2083 (April 19 to April 25, 2026) at designated resource center schools.
Most schools promote students to Class 9 regardless of BLE result because BLE promotion policy is managed locally and varies by municipality. However, students with NG are expected to clear those subjects through the grade increment exam. Contact your school and municipality for the specific rules in your area.
What Does NG Mean in BLE?
NG stands for Not Graded. It appears on your BLE marksheet when you score below 35 marks in the external theory exam for a subject or below the minimum required percentage in internal assessment.
NG carries a grade point of 0.0. If you have NG in a subject, that 0.0 is included in the weighted average calculation and brings your overall GPA down significantly.
The minimum to avoid NG in BLE theory is 35 marks out of 100, which is 35 percent. Getting exactly 35 marks gives you D grade (1.6 GPA), the lowest passing grade. Getting 34 marks or below gives you NG.
For subjects with practical or internal assessment components, minimum marks must also be met in those components separately. A student who scores well in theory but does not meet the internal minimum can still receive NG in that subject.
Students with NG should approach the grade increment exam seriously. Most municipalities organize grade increment exams for NG students within a few weeks of the main result. The grade increment exam covers the same syllabus as the main BLE exam. Scoring 35 marks or above in the grade increment exam clears the NG and updates your marksheet.
What Subjects Are Included in BLE Exam?
BLE covers all the core subjects studied in Class 8. The subjects vary slightly based on the curriculum used by each municipality but the standard subjects include:
- Compulsory Nepali
- Compulsory English
- Mathematics
- Our Surrounding (which covers social studies, science, and environmental awareness topics)
- Optional subjects
- and a Local Subject determined by the municipality.
The local subject is unique to BLE because it is decided by the local government and reflects local language, culture, or environment. This is one reason why BLE results look slightly different across different municipalities.
The BLE exam is held in the afternoon from 2 PM to 4 PM. Students and parents must note this timing carefully to avoid missing the exam.
How Is BLE Different From SEE?
Understanding the difference between BLE and SEE helps students appreciate where BLE fits in their academic journey.
BLE is the Class 8 exam. SEE is the Class 10 exam. Both use the NEB grading scale. But there are important differences.
BLE is managed locally by municipalities. SEE is managed nationally by NEB. BLE has no single national result date. SEE has one result publication date for the entire country.
BLE uses a credit-hour weighted GPA calculation. SEE uses a simple subject average GPA. This means the same individual subject grades can produce different overall GPAs under the two systems.
BLE does not directly affect (+2) Plus 2 stream selection or college admission. SEE GPA determines which (+2) Plus 2 stream you can join and which colleges you can apply to.
BLE exam time is 2 PM to 4 PM. SEE exam time is 8 AM to 11 AM.
BLE results are published separately by each municipality. SEE results are published nationally on a single date on see.ntc.net.np.
Both exams use the same grade point table from (A+) A plus (4.0) down to NG (0.0).
How to Check BLE Result in Nepal
BLE results are not on a single national website. They are published by each municipality separately because BLE is locally managed.
The BLE result is published by your local municipality or education office. Your school usually informs you when the result is ready. Students can check their BLE result through their school or local education office. Some municipalities also publish results online on their official websites. If you are unsure, the best option is to contact your school directly.
For Kathmandu Metropolitan City students, the BLE result and gradesheet are typically available through the KMC official website and affiliated schools. Lalitpur Metropolitan City also publishes results online. For students in other municipalities, contact your school administration or local municipality office directly.
The BLE 2082 exam was held from Chaitra 5 to 12, 2082 (March 19 to March 26, 2026). Results were published by most municipalities in April 2026.
You can read our complete guide on how to check BLE exam result in Nepal for detailed steps for different municipalities.
Is BLE Important for Future Studies like +2?
BLE does not directly determine (+2) Plus 2 stream selection or college admission. Those decisions are based on SEE GPA, not BLE GPA. In that sense, BLE has less formal importance than SEE.
However, BLE matters significantly in terms of academic foundation and preparation.
The subjects and concepts covered in BLE directly reappear in Class 9 and 10 at a higher difficulty level. A student who has weak Maths in BLE will face much harder Maths in Class 9 and 10 leading into SEE. A student who struggled with English in BLE will find Class 9 and 10 English increasingly challenging.
BLE performance tells you and your teachers exactly where your strengths and weaknesses are at the end of Class 8. Using this information to strengthen weak areas before Class 9 starts is one of the most valuable things a student can do with their BLE result.
Students who take BLE seriously and use their results to guide their preparation for Class 9 consistently perform better in SEE compared to students who treat BLE as an unimportant exam.
BLE also gives students their first formal experience with the NEB grading system. Understanding how grades and GPA work at BLE level removes the confusion and surprise when students encounter the same system in SEE and Class 12.
What Is a Good GPA in BLE?
A GPA of 3.2 and above is generally considered a good performance in BLE.
BLE GPA Performance Levels
- 3.6–4.0 GPA: (Excellent) – Strong preparation for Class 9 and SEE.
- 3.2–3.6 GPA: (Good) – Solid performance across most subjects.
- 2.8–3.2 GPA: (Decent) – Some subjects may need improvement.
- 2.4–2.8 GPA: (Below Good) – Several subjects need strengthening.
- Below 2.4 GPA: (Needs Improvement) – Significant academic challenges; extra support and effort are recommended before Class 9.
To put different GPA levels in context for BLE students. A GPA of 3.6 to 4.0 is excellent. Students at this level are well-prepared for Class 9 and are on track for strong SEE performance. A GPA of 3.2 to 3.6 is good and shows solid academic performance across subjects. A GPA of 2.8 to 3.2 is decent but indicates some subjects may need more attention. A GPA of 2.4 to 2.8 is below the good threshold and suggests several subjects need strengthening before SEE. A GPA below 2.4 signals significant academic challenges across multiple subjects. Focused support and effort before Class 9 is important at this level.
The most important thing to remember is that BLE GPA is not a final judgment. It is a starting point for improvement. Students with lower BLE GPAs who work seriously in Class 9 and 10 regularly achieve much stronger SEE results. The pattern of improvement matters more than the starting point.
How to Improve After BLE Result
Whether your BLE result was excellent or disappointing, there are clear actions to take after checking your grades.
If you performed well with 3.2 GPA or above, maintain the same study habits in Class 9. Do not become complacent. Class 9 content is harder than Class 8 and requires continued effort.
If you performed averagely with 2.4 to 3.2 GPA, identify the specific subjects where your grades were weakest. Use the summer break before Class 9 to strengthen those areas. Getting tutoring or extra practice in those specific subjects during this period is a high-impact investment.
If you received NG in any subject, apply for the grade increment exam through your school immediately. Prepare seriously for the NG subjects. The minimum you need to pass is 35 marks. That is achievable with focused preparation over a few weeks.
If you received below 2.4 overall GPA, this is a signal that multiple subjects need serious attention. Do not wait for problems to compound in Class 9. Speak to your teachers about specific areas to improve. Consider getting additional tutoring before Class 9 starts.
In all cases, using your BLE result as specific feedback rather than just a number is the most productive approach. Your grades tell you subject by subject where you are strong and where you need work.
Final Summary
The BLE grading system in Nepal uses the same NEB grade point scale as SEE and Class 12. (A+) A plus (4.0) for 90 to 100 marks, A (3.6) for 80 to 89, (B+) B plus (3.2) for 70 to 79, B (2.8) for 60 to 69, (C+) C plus (2.4) for 50 to 59, C (2.0) for 40 to 49, D (1.6) for 35 to 39, and NG (0.0) for below 35.
BLE GPA is calculated using a credit hour weighted formula where the local subject has the highest credit hours at 8 and therefore the biggest impact on your overall GPA.
Students are not marked as fail in BLE. NG appears for marks below 35 in theory. Students with NG can appear in the grade increment exam organized by their municipality.
A GPA of 3.2 and above is considered good in BLE. BLE does not directly affect (+2) Plus 2 or college admission but it is an important foundation for SEE preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is BLE exam in Nepal?
BLE stands for Basic Level Examination. It is the Class 8 final exam in Nepal that marks the completion of basic level education. BLE is managed by local municipalities, not centrally by NEB. Students receive grades and GPA on their marksheet instead of percentage marks.
What is the BLE grading system in Nepal?
BLE uses the NEB 4.0 grade point scale. A plus is 4.0 (90 to 100 marks), A is 3.6 (80 to 89), B plus is 3.2 (70 to 79), B is 2.8 (60 to 69), C plus is 2.4 (50 to 59), C is 2.0 (40 to 49), D is 1.6 (35 to 39), and NG is 0.0 (below 35). Students need at least D grade in each subject to avoid NG.
How is BLE GPA calculated?
BLE GPA uses a credit hour weighted formula. Each subject has assigned credit hours (Nepali 5, English 4, Maths 4, Our Surrounding 8, Local Subject 5). Multiply each subject’s grade point by its credit hours, add all the results together, and divide by the total credit hours (26). This gives your overall BLE GPA.
What does NG mean in BLE result?
NG means Not Graded. It appears when a student scores below 35 marks in the theory exam of a subject. NG carries 0.0 grade points and significantly lowers overall GPA. Students with NG can appear in the grade increment exam organized by their municipality.
Can you fail BLE exam in Nepal?
Students are not marked as fail in BLE. The grading system uses NG (Not Graded) instead of fail for below-minimum performance. Most schools promote students to Class 9 regardless but students with NG are expected to clear those subjects in the grade increment exam.
What is a good GPA in BLE?
A GPA of 3.2 and above is generally considered a good performance in BLE. This corresponds to B plus grade which requires marks of 70 to 79 in subjects. A GPA of 3.6 or above (A grade) is excellent.
Does BLE result affect (+2) Plus 2 admission?
No. BLE result does not directly affect (+2) Plus 2 stream selection or college admission. SEE GPA from Class 10 is what determines those decisions. However, your BLE performance reflects your academic foundation and directly affects how prepared you are for Class 9, 10, and ultimately SEE.
How to check BLE result in Nepal?
BLE results are published locally by each municipality. Contact your school or local municipality education office to check your result. Some municipalities publish results online on their official websites. There is no single national BLE result website.
What is the full form of BLE in Nepal?
BLE stands for Basic Level Examination. It was previously known as DLE (District Level Examination) and is sometimes called BEE (Basic Education Examination) in some areas.
If my marks is 44.5 and 45 is A+ and my teacher has given a grace of 0.5 to make it A+ will it deducted when it goes for rechecking?
Hi Rujal, if your result already shows A+, it will usually stay the same.
Rechecking is done to correct mistakes, not to remove grace marks.
So your marks will not be reduced without a valid reason.
44.5 is rounded up to 45.Its not grace marks
