A student visa is a legal stamp in your passport that lets you live and study in another country. To get one, you need an admission letter from a recognized college or university abroad, proof that you can pay for your studies, and an NOC from Nepal’s Ministry of Education. Processing times range from 3 weeks for the UK to 16 weeks for Canada, and fees go from NPR 10,000 for Germany up to NPR 95,000 or more for Australia and the UK. Your chances of getting approved depend mostly on how clearly you show that you are a genuine student with enough money and a good reason to come back to Nepal after finishing.
Before you apply for any student visa, make sure your NOC is done first. For the full NOC process, you can read our guide on NOC Nepal.
What Is a Student Visa?
A student visa is a special permission that a foreign country gives you so you can enter and study there. Without it, you cannot start your course even if a college has already accepted you. It is usually a sticker or stamp placed inside your passport by the embassy of the country you are going to.
Each country has its own name for it. Australia calls it the Student Visa Subclass 500. The UK calls it the Student Route Visa. The USA calls it the F-1 Visa. Canada calls it the Study Permit. Japan uses the College Student Visa. Germany uses the National Student Visa. The name is different but the idea is the same everywhere. It gives you permission to be in that country for the duration of your studies.
A student visa usually also sets some rules you have to follow. In most countries you need to stay enrolled full time, maintain your grades, and follow work hour limits. If you break these rules the visa can be cancelled.
One thing many Nepali students do not know is that a tourist visa cannot be used for studying abroad. Even if you enter a country on a tourist visa and then find a college, you cannot legally start a course on that visa. You need a proper student visa before you arrive.
Who Needs a Student Visa?
Any Nepali citizen planning to study abroad for a full degree or any course longer than a few months needs a student visa. This covers bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, PhD programs, diploma programs, and language courses that go for more than about three to six months.
If your course is very short, some countries allow you to enter on a visitor visa. For example, the UK allows certain English language courses of under six months on a visitor visa. New Zealand allows study of up to three months on a visitor visa. The USA allows short recreational courses on a B-2 tourist visa. But for any real degree program, you always need a student visa.
There is one more step that is unique to Nepali students. Before you even apply for a student visa, you need to get a No Objection Certificate or NOC from Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. This is a Nepali government requirement. Without the NOC, you cannot legally transfer money abroad for your tuition, and many embassies also expect to see it as part of your financial documentation. The process is fully online through noc.moest.gov.np. The fee is NPR 2,000 and it takes one to five working days. For the full NOC guide, you can read our guide on NOC Nepal.
Documents Required for a Student Visa
The exact documents needed depend on which country you are going to, but most student visa applications from Nepal need the same core set of papers. Getting everything ready before you start is one of the best things you can do.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned course end date. It should also have at least two blank pages. If your passport is expiring soon, renew it before starting your visa application.
You need your admission letter from your university or college. Different countries call this different things. Australia calls it a Confirmation of Enrolment or CoE. The UK calls it a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies or CAS. The USA issues a Form I-20. Canada sends a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution. Japan requires a Certificate of Eligibility. Whatever it is called, this document confirms your place in a course and is the most important paper in your whole application.
You need proof that you can pay for your studies. This means bank statements showing you have enough money to cover your tuition and living costs. Different countries have different amounts they want to see. The UK wants funds held for 28 consecutive days before you apply. Australia wants evidence covering 12 months of living costs which they calculate at AUD 29,710 for the main applicant. Canada expects CAD 20,635 per year on top of tuition. The USA looks at your I-20 which shows the total estimated cost. Banks want to see consistent money over several months, not just a recent large deposit.
You need your academic transcripts and certificates. For a bachelor’s abroad, you need your SEE marksheet and your class 12 marksheet and certificate. For a master’s abroad, you also need your bachelor’s degree certificate and transcripts. These documents should be officially authenticated.
You need your English language test results. Most countries require IELTS Academic or PTE Academic or TOEFL. The typical minimum is around 6.0 on IELTS though some programs and countries require higher. Germany accepts evidence of English or German depending on the course language.
You need your NOC from Nepal’s Ministry of Education. This is not optional. Without it you cannot legally pay tuition from Nepal.
The UK also requires a TB tuberculosis test certificate from an approved clinic in Nepal because Nepal is on the high risk country list. This is not a general health check but a specific tuberculosis test done at a designated facility. You book this appointment separately and submit the result with your visa application.
A police clearance certificate is needed for some countries including Canada and Australia when the stay is longer than certain periods. You get this from the Nepal Police.
Passport size photographs as per each country’s specifications are also needed.
If you have been rejected for any visa before, you need to disclose this honestly in your application. Hiding a previous rejection is treated as misrepresentation and leads to automatic refusal.
For a detailed checklist of every document you need, you can read our guide on study abroad document checklist for Nepali students.
How to Apply for a Student Visa
The student visa application process has several steps and they need to happen in the right order. Rushing or skipping steps is one of the most common reasons applications fail.
The first thing you do is get your university admission. Once you have an unconditional offer letter from a recognized institution abroad, everything else can begin. Without this letter, no other step is possible.
The second thing is to get your NOC from Nepal’s Ministry of Education. You apply online at noc.moest.gov.np with your admission letter, academic documents, and citizenship details. The fee is NPR 2,000. Once your NOC is approved you can download it as a digitally signed PDF. You need this before you transfer any money abroad or finalize your visa application.
The third thing is to pay your tuition deposit to the university if they require one. Some universities ask for a partial fee payment before they issue you the CAS or CoE or other visa support document. After you pay, they issue the document you need for your visa application.
The fourth thing is to complete the online visa application form for your destination country. Australia uses ImmiAccount. The UK uses the gov.uk visa portal. Canada uses the IRCC Secure Account online. The USA uses the DS-160 form online. Japan’s visa process goes through your university first which obtains the Certificate of Eligibility on your behalf. Germany uses the VIDEX online form through the German Embassy website.
The fifth thing is to pay your visa fee. Each country has its own fee and payment method. These are covered in the fees section below.
The sixth thing is to book your biometrics appointment. Most countries require you to give your fingerprints and a digital photo at a Visa Application Centre. In Nepal, VFS Global in Kathmandu handles biometrics for many countries including Australia, Canada, the UK, and Schengen countries. Japan takes biometric data at their own embassy. You cannot do biometrics at home or online.
The seventh thing for some countries is an in person visa interview. The USA always requires an interview at the US Embassy in Kathmandu. Germany may require an interview as well. The UK and Australia do not require a routine interview but may contact you for one if they have specific questions.
After submitting everything, you wait for a decision. Processing times are covered in the next section. Once approved, your visa sticker is placed in your passport and you can travel.
Student Visa Processing Time
Processing times for student visas from Nepal depend on the country and time of year. Peak periods like February to March and July to August when many students are applying for major intake dates can make things slower.
For the UK, processing usually takes about three to four weeks after you submit your biometrics and documents. Priority processing is available for an extra fee and can get a decision in around five working days.
For Australia, processing time varies a lot. On average expect four to eight weeks for higher education programs. Australia placed Nepal in the highest risk category called Assessment Level 3 in January 2026, which means applications from Nepali students are checked more carefully and can take longer.
For Canada, processing takes eight to sixteen weeks on average. The Student Direct Stream which is a faster route is not available for Nepal, so all Nepali students go through the regular process which is slower.
For the USA, it depends on the interview wait time at the Embassy in Kathmandu plus a few weeks for processing after the interview. Total time is usually around two to three months but can vary.
For Germany, the embassy in Kathmandu typically processes student visa applications in three to four weeks though applying two to three months before your intended start date is strongly advised to account for any delays.
For Japan, your university applies for a Certificate of Eligibility on your behalf which takes one to three months. Once that document arrives in Nepal, the embassy typically stamps your visa in about one to two weeks.
For South Korea, processing for the D-2 student visa usually takes one to two weeks at the Korean Embassy in Kathmandu once your documents are complete.
Apply early. For September start dates, you should ideally begin your visa application process by April or May at the latest.
Student Visa Fees
Student visa fees vary significantly by country. All of these are in addition to any university fees, health insurance, or biometrics fees.
For the UK, the visa application fee is GBP 558 which is approximately NPR 95,000. On top of this you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge which is GBP 776 per year of study, approximately NPR 130,000 per year. So a three year course means paying around NPR 390,000 just in health surcharge on top of the visa fee.
For Australia, the student visa application fee was raised to AUD 2,500 in July 2026 which is approximately NPR 210,000. You also need Overseas Student Health Cover, called OSHC, which costs approximately AUD 600 to 800 per year.
For Canada, the study permit fee is CAD 150 which is approximately NPR 13,500. Biometrics cost an additional CAD 85 which is approximately NPR 7,650. A medical examination if required costs around NPR 12,000 to 15,000 extra.
For the USA, the visa application fee is USD 185 which is approximately NPR 24,000. On top of this you pay the SEVIS fee of USD 350 which is approximately NPR 46,000. Total visa related fees for the USA are therefore around NPR 70,000.
For Germany, the visa fee is EUR 75 which is approximately NPR 9,000 to 10,000.
For Japan, the student visa fee is approximately JPY 3,000 which is around NPR 3,000 to 4,000 and is sometimes waived for certain programs.
For South Korea, the D-2 student visa fee is around KRW 60,000 which is approximately NPR 6,000 to 7,000.
Nepal’s own NOC fee is NPR 2,000 paid through the MoEST portal.
These fees are all non refundable. Even if your visa is rejected, you do not get the money back. This is why getting your documents right the first time matters so much.
Common Reasons for Student Visa Rejection
Student visa rejection rates from Nepal have been rising in recent years for several major destinations. Australia’s rejection rate for Nepali students was around 65 percent in early 2026 which is extremely high. Canada’s overall study permit refusal rate reached approximately 59 percent in 2025. New Zealand rejects about 47 percent of Nepali student applications. Understanding why helps you avoid the same mistakes.
The biggest reason for rejection across almost every country is not showing enough money in a convincing way. Banks want to see consistent funds held over several months, not a large sudden deposit made just before the application. Last minute unexplained money transfers are a very common rejection trigger. Make sure your funds have been sitting in your account for at least three to six months before applying and that the source of the money is clear.
The second most common reason is not convincing the visa officer that you are a genuine student who will come back to Nepal after finishing your studies. Officers want to see that you have reasons to return, such as family ties, property, job prospects, or other commitments in Nepal. If your application does not address this clearly, the assumption will be that you want to stay abroad permanently.
Weak or vague study plan explanations are also a major issue. If you cannot clearly explain why you chose your specific course, why you chose that specific country, and how the course connects to your career goals, the officer may doubt your genuine intent to study.
Incomplete or inconsistent documents are another very common cause. A single missing page, a name spelled differently on two documents, or an offer letter that is conditional rather than unconditional can all lead to rejection. Every document must be complete, accurate, and consistent with every other document in your application.
For countries like Australia, Nepali students face extra scrutiny because Nepal is now classified at Assessment Level 3 which is the highest risk category. This means documents are checked more thoroughly and the bar for approval is higher.
A missing or invalid NOC is also a rejection risk in cases where the embassy expects to see financial documentation tied to a legitimate study plan. If you have had an NOC rejected and are trying to apply with incorrect documents, you should fix that first. For help with a rejected NOC, you can read our guide on NOC rejected, common reasons and how to fix them.
Previous visa rejections from any country that you have not disclosed are an immediate disqualification. Always tell the truth in your application about your visa history.
Tips to Improve Your Student Visa Approval Chances
Getting your student visa approved from Nepal in 2026 is harder than it used to be, especially for Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. But it is absolutely still achievable if you prepare properly.
Start early. Seriously. Do not start collecting documents one month before your planned travel. Give yourself at least four to six months from the time you get your admission letter to when you need to travel. This gives you time to fix any problems that come up without panic.
Get your NOC done as early as possible. The NOC from Nepal’s Ministry of Education is one of the first things you should do after receiving your admission letter. It is required before you transfer tuition money and helps show that your study plan is legitimate. The process is online at noc.moest.gov.np and takes one to five working days.
Show stable, consistent money. Do not suddenly put a large amount in your account just before applying. Banks want to see that you have had the money for months, that it came from a legitimate source like salary or business income, and that the amount is genuinely enough to cover your full first year of studies. If your parents are sponsoring you, their income documents and bank history need to show the same consistency.
Write a clear and honest study plan or statement of purpose. This document should explain why you chose this specific course, why you chose this specific country, how the course connects to what you have studied before, and what you plan to do with the qualification when you come back to Nepal. It should sound like you actually thought about it and not like a template that anyone could have written.
Show that you have real reasons to come back to Nepal. Family commitments, property in your family’s name, job prospects in your field in Nepal, siblings or parents who depend on you, all of these are things that show a visa officer you are coming back. Mention these honestly in your application or statement of purpose.
Be completely honest about everything. Do not hide a previous visa rejection. Do not exaggerate your financial situation. Do not submit documents that have been altered. Visa officers are trained to spot inconsistencies and any sign of dishonesty leads to an automatic rejection that can also affect future applications.
Prepare properly for interviews if your destination requires one. For the USA, the interview at the Embassy in Kathmandu is a required part of the process. Practice answering questions about your course, your funding, and your plans after graduation. Speak clearly and confidently. Do not memorize scripted answers. Just know your own story well enough to explain it simply.
Make sure your English test score meets the requirement. For most English speaking countries the minimum is IELTS 6.0 overall. Some programs and universities require higher. Do your English test early enough that you have time to retake it if your first score is not high enough.
Use a reliable process and do not rely on unofficial information. Always check requirements directly on the official embassy or immigration website of your destination country. Policies change and what was true last year may not be true this year. If you use an education consultancy, verify anything they tell you against official sources before acting on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a student visa and who needs one?
A student visa is official permission from a foreign country that allows you to live and study there during your course. Any Nepali citizen planning to study abroad for a full diploma, bachelor’s, master’s, or language course longer than a few months needs a student visa. You cannot legally start studying abroad on a tourist visa.
Do I need an NOC before applying for a student visa?
Yes. Nepali students need an NOC from Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology before they can legally transfer tuition money abroad. Many embassies also expect to see evidence of a legitimate and officially cleared study plan. Apply for your NOC at noc.moest.gov.np after getting your admission letter.
How long does a student visa take from Nepal?
Processing times depend on the country. UK takes about three to four weeks. Germany takes about three to four weeks. Australia takes four to eight weeks but can be longer for Nepali students due to Assessment Level 3 classification. Canada takes eight to sixteen weeks. The USA depends on interview wait times but is typically two to three months total. Japan’s Certificate of Eligibility takes one to three months and then the visa itself takes one to two more weeks.
How much does a student visa cost from Nepal?
The UK student visa costs approximately GBP 558 or around NPR 95,000 plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of GBP 776 per year. Australia recently raised its fee to AUD 2,500 or approximately NPR 210,000. Canada’s study permit is CAD 150 or around NPR 13,500 plus CAD 85 for biometrics. The USA costs around NPR 70,000 total including the SEVIS fee. Germany is around EUR 75 or NPR 10,000. Japan is very low at around NPR 3,000 to 4,000.
Why do student visas get rejected for Nepali students?
The most common reasons are not showing enough money in a convincing way, not demonstrating genuine intent to study and return to Nepal, weak or vague study plans, inconsistent or incomplete documents, previous visa rejections not disclosed, and for Australia specifically, the higher scrutiny that comes from Nepal’s Assessment Level 3 classification since January 2026.
Can I apply for a student visa without IELTS?
For most English speaking destinations like the UK, Australia, and Canada, IELTS or an approved English test is a standard requirement. Some universities in these countries may accept other evidence of English ability, and Germany accepts IELTS or TOEFL for English taught programs and German language tests for German taught programs. Always check the specific requirement for your university and destination country directly.
What is Assessment Level 3 for Nepal and Australia?
Australia classified Nepal as a highest risk country for student visa applications in January 2026. This is called Assessment Level 3. It means Nepali applicants face stricter document checks, more thorough financial scrutiny, and lower overall approval rates compared to lower risk countries. Approval rates for Nepali students dropped significantly after this classification took effect.
What happens if my student visa is rejected?
You can reapply after addressing the specific reasons for the rejection. Most countries do not have a formal appeals process for student visa rejections so the only option is to fix the problems and submit a new application with a new fee. If your rejection is connected to an NOC issue, you can read our guide on NOC rejected, common reasons and how to fix them for help fixing that first.
Do I need a TB test for a UK student visa?
Yes. Nepal is on the UK’s list of countries where a tuberculosis test is required. You need to get the TB test done at an approved clinic in Nepal before your UK student visa application. The test certificate must be submitted with your application. This is a specific tuberculosis test, not a general health check.
Can I work while studying abroad on a student visa?
Yes in most countries but with limits. Australia allows 48 hours per fortnight during study and unlimited hours during official vacation periods. The UK allows up to 20 hours per week during term and unlimited during holidays. Canada allows up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions and full time during breaks. The USA allows on campus work only during the first year and requires special permission for off campus work. South Korea allows up to 25 hours per week with university permission. Always follow the exact work limits for your visa type as breaking these rules can lead to visa cancellation.
