What Is CMAT in Nepal?

CMAT stands for Central Management Admission Test. It’s the single entrance exam Tribhuvan University’s Faculty of Management uses to screen every applicant across its bachelor level management programs, instead of each program running its own separate test. Passing CMAT is mandatory, if you skip the exam entirely, you’re not eligible for admission that year, whatever your academic record looks like.

Clearing CMAT gets you into the pool of candidates a college is allowed to admit from, it doesn’t hand you a seat at your first choice college or program automatically. After you pass, you still go through each individual college’s own admission and document verification process, and competitive colleges and programs fill up based on demand and available seats, not just your raw CMAT score.

Who Conducts CMAT?

The Faculty of Management’s Office of the Dean, under Tribhuvan University, publishes the CMAT notice, sets the exam date, and runs the application system, mainly through fomecd.edu.np and tudoms.org.

What Is CMAT Used For?

Right now CMAT is required for the eight bachelor level programs listed above. It doesn’t cover TU’s graduate level management programs like MBS or MBA, which run their own separate entrance tests, or other faculties’ exams like BCA, which falls under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Minimum GPA and Grade Requirements

TU’s official notice sets eligibility as a minimum of grade D in theory and grade C in practical examination in each subject, with a CGPA of 1.8 or more in grade 11 and 12, or a minimum second division in 10+2, PCL, or an equivalent qualification in any discipline. Passing 10+2 or an equivalent in any stream qualifies you academically. There’s no requirement that you studied management subjects.

Can Science Students Apply for CMAT?

Yes. Eligibility is open to any discipline, science, management, humanities, or education, as long as the grade and CGPA thresholds above are met.

Can Management Students Apply for CMAT?

Yes, and a management background sometimes makes the general awareness and business content feel more familiar, though it doesn’t change the eligibility rule itself.

Can Humanities Students Apply for CMAT?

Yes, the same open eligibility applies.

Can Students From Other Streams Apply?

Yes, including education stream and PCL graduates, as long as the grade and division requirements are met.

Can Students Waiting for Their Results Apply?

Yes. TU’s notice explicitly allows students still waiting for their grade 11 or 12 results to apply, but they must submit their passed certificate at the time of admission, not at the time of the CMAT application.

Is There an Age Limit for CMAT?

Yes, entirely multiple choice. Based on available sources there’s no negative marking scheme described for CMAT, unlike some other Nepali entrance exams such as MECEE-BL, though you should confirm this on your specific admit card instructions before the exam.

Vocabulary, grammar, sentence correction, reading comprehension, and verbal reasoning, testing your general command of English rather than literature specific knowledge.

Quantitative Ability

Arithmetic, percentage, ratio and proportion, averages, profit and loss, time and work, and basic algebra, presented mostly as word problems rather than pure calculation.

Logical Reasoning

Analogy, number and letter series, classification, coding and decoding, and logical relationships between statements.

What Is Re-CMAT?

Re-CMAT is TU’s follow up entrance exam for students who missed the main CMAT or didn’t secure admission through it, held on a separate later date within the same admission year.

Difference Between CMAT and Re-CMAT

They’re the same exam in format, eligibility, and purpose, Re-CMAT simply runs later in the year as a second opportunity for students who missed or didn’t clear the main sitting. Your Re-CMAT result carries equal standing to a main cycle CMAT result for admission purposes.

CMAT vs Other Entrance Exams

CMAT vs IOE Entrance

IOE’s entrance exam governs admission to TU’s engineering programs, a completely separate system from CMAT with its own science and math based syllabus, built for a different field entirely.

CMAT vs CEE

CEE, now officially MECEE-BL, governs admission to MBBS, BDS, nursing, and other medical and health science programs, run by the Medical Education Commission rather than TU, with its own science based syllabus and a negative marking scheme CMAT doesn’t have.

CMAT vs BCA Entrance

BCA’s entrance exam falls under TU’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences with its own computer science oriented content, separate from CMAT’s Faculty of Management system.

CMAT vs BSc CSIT Entrance

BSc CSIT’s entrance exam is run separately with a science and computing focused syllabus, distinct from CMAT’s general business aptitude format.
